Bathroom Horror!

My last few sessions have been a real mixed affair, with a good result mixed in with some very average ones. The Saturday before last saw me venture to the Fossdyke Canal in Lincolnshire for the seventh round of the Individual League. The drawbag wasn’t particularly kind to me and put me on Peg 53 on the Odder section. With my section running from 52 to 60 I could hardly have been further away from the two form pegs of 59 and 60!

I had an enjoyable session catching around 3lb of small roach on bloodworm and a couple of bonus perch on lobby. Although I felt I did quite well to beat the anglers around me, my 4-1-0 was quite a way off the 9-13-0 that I needed to win the section, with Andy Scott and Alistair Ogilvie tying on this weight - from pegs 59 and 60! Generally this would be more than enough to win on this canal, but it fished exceptionally well with Matt Hall taking the overall honours with a 14lb net, that included a perch over 2lb, and a 1lb-plus roach taken on lobworm!

That evening me and my partner in piscatorial crime, Matt Godfrey, had arranged for a couple of friends to come up and stay with us prior to the second round of the Thorne Pairs on the Stainforth & Keadby Canal the following day. Regular readers of Pole Fishing will be familiar with top rod Ed Warren, and his best mate Ant Rodgers is also a cracking angler, and a key part of the Preston Innovations team.

We all enjoy a pint so it was no surprise that the night turned out to be eventful. Although we had a great time in the pub, the night took on a horrifying twist when a trip to the toilet in the early hours saw me switch on the bathroom light and find Ed asleep in the bath stark naked! The funniest thing was, when I woke him up he couldn’t remember how he got there!

After the draw the next day, I was pleased to learn that I was on an end peg – until I learnt that the weights on the West Street section where I had drawn had all been taken in the middle of the section in previous weeks.

Still, I had an enjoyable day catching a big 7lb on bloodworm, though sadly this was only good enough for sixth in section. Matt faired better with an 11-10-0 net from Peg 169 at Wykewell, so we recorded a respectable weight as a pair, and are still in contention in the league going into the penultimate round.
